How it works
Read a number plate
in three seconds
State code
The first two letters are the state. MH is Maharashtra. DL is Delhi. KA is Karnataka. Every state in India has a unique two-letter prefix.
District code
The two digits after the state code identify the district or city. MH-01 is Mumbai Central. MH-04 is Pune. Higher numbers are often outer or rural districts.
Series + number
The final two letters and four digits are the registration series. They reset when the previous series is exhausted — so AA 0001 follows ZZ 9999.
