How to Change Address in RC

Last updated · 3-step guide

Moved to a new house? Your RC address should be updated to match. Here's how to do it at the RTO or online via Parivahan.

Quick answer

To change the address in your RC, submit Form 33 with new address proof (Aadhaar, electricity bill, or rent agreement), the original RC, insurance, and PUC — online via the Parivahan portal or at your RTO. The fee is ₹50–₹200 and an updated smart-card RC arrives by post within 7–21 days.

Steps

  1. Prepare documents

You need: original RC, new address proof (Aadhaar, electricity bill, or rental agreement), vehicle insurance, PUC certificate, and filled Form 33 (Application for Change of Address in RC).

  2. Apply online or at RTO

Many states support online address change through the Parivahan portal. Upload the documents, pay the fee (typically ₹50–₹200), and submit. For non-Parivahan states, visit your current RTO with original documents.

  3. Receive updated RC

The updated RC (showing the new address) is dispatched by post within 7–21 days. A new smart card RC is issued — the old RC is effectively replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to update RC if I move within the same city?

It's not legally mandatory for same-city moves, but updating it avoids mismatches during police checks and insurance claims. It's recommended, especially if you're moving to a different district.

What if I moved to a different state?

For a permanent inter-state move, the process is different — you need an NOC from the current RTO and must re-register in the new state. See the NOC guide for the full inter-state transfer process.
